Description

Early 19th-Century Antique Treen Sugar Caddy / Box With Associated Antique Steel Sugar Nips & Sugar Cone

As per the images, we offer for sale an early 19th-Century antique treen box / caddy, almost identical to a tea caddy of the same period, but used as a “sugar box”, complete with a fitted steel chopping blade.

The elongated blade is fitted to the box by way of a steel hinge and has a steel base, which in turn is mounted on an internal wooden plank. The blade is fitted with a turned wooden handle. A manufacturer’s stamp is incised into the blade.

The box is painted with a scumble effect on a pine carcass to make the box appear to be made from a more expensive timber. The front is inlaid with a bone key escutcheon.

Offered for sale with an associated pair of early 19th-Century antique steel sugar nips and a contemporary sugar cone wrapped in paper.

Provenance – 19thC. Sweden – the blade bears a Swedish makers stamp. The sugar appears to 20thC.

Condition – Good as per the images. There is surface wear to the surface of the box commensurate with age. The blade and nips still function.

Size – 24 cm x 33 cm x 16 cm
