Early C19th Etching ‘A Cockney & his Wife going to Wycombe’ by James Gillray

This fine example of social satire by James Gillray was published 10th June 1805 by H. Humphrey, 27 St. James Street, London and pictures a very well dressed couple riding in a carriage.

In stark contrast, the slender ‘Cockney’ is somewhat obscured by his corpulent wife. And an emaciated horse pulling the carriage follows a very well fed dog carrying an oversized bone.

This hand coloured etching is in excellent condition and retains good colour. Presented in a later, ebonised and parcel gilt frame.

W: 38cm etching where visible (frame height 54cm)
