Four 19th-Century English Antique Horsebrasses, Original Antique Leather Martingale & Associated Items

Once popular in England during the 19th century, especially in the Victorian era, horsebrasses were believed to protect horses and their handlers from evil spirits. They were thought to be amulets or charms that brought good luck.

Also used as festive decorations on horse harnesses. They were often attached to martingales, face pieces, side pieces, and other parts of the harness.

Horse brasses often reflected the owner’s identity or local customs and superstitions.

They were traditionally used to decorate pubs and are now sought after as collectors’ items.

Here we offer for sale four original 19th-Century English antique horsebrasses, each of individual design, attached to their original martingale leather strap.

Offered for sale with three other original 19th-Century leather straps / reins.
