Large & Impressive Early 18th-Century Baroque Antique Carved Wooden Sculpture Of A Saint, Approx 56″ (4ft 8″)
A large and impressive early 18th-century Baroque antique carved wooden sculpture of a Saint.
Continental origin. Most probably Italian.
Standing full-length at almost 5 feet in height in a typical pose, his right hand outstretched.
The unidentified male Saint is swathed in robes.
It retains a significant amount of its original gesso and polychrome.
Provenance – Unknown. Acquired privately within East Anglia. The sculpture bears an old inventory label verso, albeit quite worn.
Condition – Please refer to the images. Understood to have originally been complete with the figure holding a book within his left hand. His left arm, hand and book are now missing. Acquired by us in this condition, with the limb missing. There is surface wear to the gesso and polychrome surface commensurate with age.
