Description

Late 18th Century & Later Antique Corner Standard Rushlight

The rustic charm of this piece simply appealed.

A charming corner standard rushlight.

With an 18th-century iron nip, the jaws united by a single large rivet with decorative scrolled tips, and an arm with a decorative twisted stem terminating in a scroll with a hanging weight / counter-balance below.

Supported on a plain wooden stem and stool base with four turned-splayed legs below. The stem and legs appear to be constructed from Ash. The seat board of the stool base appears to be elm.

Provenance – Unknown.

Condition. Please refer to the images. The wooden stem has been replaced historically and is secured to the underside of the stool base by way of a washer and screw. This has been added at a much later time to give the stem structural strength where it joins the base. There is surface wear to the stool base. The four splayed legs all show signs of wear at their tips. The nip stands well and does not wobble. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size – Height 34 1/2″ (87.5 cm)
