Description

Late 18th-Century Primitive English Antique Iron Splint Holder Lighting Device / Peerman In “Barn Found” Condition

A late 18th-century primitive antique iron splint holder/peerman.

English origin. Made by a blacksmith.

With a hanging hook, over a twisted iron shaft with an adjoining iron hooped splint holder with sprung arm. Terminating on a rectangular-shaped drip-pan base, supported by four raised legs.

These devices were made to hold a wooden splint within the iron hoop (secured under tension by the spring). The splint was then lit to provide light.

Provenance – Unknown origin. Found in a local Norfolk barn.

Condition – Please refer to the images. There is surface pitting and oxidation to the iron commensurate with age. A minor loss is apparent in the drip pan, and one leg has a minor element of play in it. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size – Height 20 cm (approx 8″)
