Description
Late 18th Century Scandinavian Antique Bent Wood Box Bearing Two Love Hearts
A rare and evocative late 18th-century Scandinavian bentwood box, handcrafted as a traditional love token. This oval box features a lift-off lid with an integrated carry handle and is adorned with pyrography and two polychrome love hearts, symbolizing affection and fidelity.
The exterior surfaces are richly embellished with hand-painted floral and foliate motifs that retain much of their original charm. These decorative elements reflect the rural Nordic folk art tradition, where such boxes were often exchanged during courtship or betrothal.
A personal inscription—now gently worn with age—adds a poignant layer of historical intimacy to the lid, suggesting the box was gifted to commemorate a romantic bond. The bentwood construction, with its pegged joints and warm patina, speaks to the craftsmanship and sentimentality of 18th-century Scandinavian domestic life.
This piece is not only a collectible example of vernacular art, but also a tangible relic of love and devotion from a bygone era.
