Description

18th-Century English Antique Needlework Dated “1788”

In the New Testament, angels are depicted as ministering to Jesus, particularly after his temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:11) and in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:43), offering comfort, strength, and service.

In this 18th-century, hand-sewn, English antique needlework, entitled “Ministration of Angels to Jesus Christ”, named and dated “Aubrey Abel Lowdell 1788,” we see an interpretation of this story.

Presented behind period glass in a gilt inner slip and carved ebonised frame.

Provenance – Unknown.

Condition – Please refer to the images. The colours remain vibrant. There are minor general marks and some small holes. The glass has a minor crack towards the top. This isn’t that noticeable and given the glass within the frame is of the period, we are somewhat reluctant to change this as it forms part of the history and integrity of the piece. The needlework does display well.

Size – 46 cm x 32 cm excluding the frame (18 1/8″ x 12 5/8″)
