Description
A Small Early 19th-Century Indian Antique Tabletop Jewellery Box
An antique, handcrafted, tabletop box made from teak with decorative brass strapwork, lockplate and carry-handle.
Of Indian origin. Made in the Kerala Region of India. Known as a “Nettur Petti” (meaning “made in”), Malabar box, or “Amada Petti” (meaning “small box”). These are traditional jewellery boxes.
A box of this type is believed to bring prosperity and good luck if kept within the owner’s home.
Early 19th-century in date, although reminiscent of those made in earlier times.
With a shaped lid surmounted with a shaped carry-handle and decorative brass strapwork to all edges, the front sloping panel is centred with an elongated brass panel terminating with a hasp. Verso, the lid is joined to the carcass by way of two decorative, elongated, brass strap hinges. The front apron is fitted with a large lock plate, and the sides and back are again edged with decorative brass strapwork.
With polychrome decoration throughout the outer surfaces, incorporating stylised elephants on the upper surface of the lid and foliate scrolls and geometric patterns. The geometric patterns and foliate scrolls are repeated throughout the other outer surfaces.
The lid opens to reveal an interior fitted with a till.
