Description

Mid 19th-Century Antique Slipware Dish / Charger, Dated “1851”

A generously-sized mid-19th-century Continental slipware dish or charger, boldly dated “1851” at its centre. Crafted in underglaze brown with decorative cream slip over an earthenware body, this piece exemplifies rustic folk pottery traditions found across Central and Western Europe.

Its substantial size and commemorative date suggest it may have been produced to mark a seasonal festivity or domestic milestone. The hand-applied slip decoration and earthy palette reflect regional ceramic practices—possibly Germanic or Low Countries in origin—where utilitarian wares were often imbued with symbolic charm.

The surface shows natural wear consistent with age, enhancing its authenticity and character. A fine example of vernacular Continental ceramics, ideal for collectors of folk art or rustic interiors.

Bearing an old collection number “108” verso.

Provenance – Unknown.

Condition – Please refer to the images. No cracks. There are minor surface glaze losses commensurate with age. The plate displays well.
