Nanny Still ‘Tohveli’ Vide Poche
A trinket dish designed by Nanny Still for Riihimäki, Finland, 1953. The design’s Finnish name ‘Tohveli’ translates as Slipper, and this item is one of Still’s earliest art pieces.
As soon as Nanny Still entered Riihimäki she had the opportunity to become acquainted with art products alongside her work for industrial production – this phenomena is often cited by Nordic design industry practitioners’ as integral to their success.
This vide poche, resembling a curled lily pad, marks the starting point of Still’s exploration of various glass making techniques and glass’ plasticity.
Here she is restraint, using white cane in clear glass to make a filigree pattern which swirls around the closing form of the dish. The leaf shape is also delicate and respects the trend for organic modernism at the time.
